My son’s field day was yesterday! Field day is SO MUCH FUN! If you don’t know what field day is, it’s like a small olympics for kids. Long jump, 50 yard dash, etc. Each kid gets to pick 6 events that they want to participate in. I remember my field day when I was growing up. I couldn’t wait for that day (mostly so I could get out of class for a day!). My kids both obtained many more 1st pace ribbons than I ever did. The kids look forward to having field day every year, and now as a parent, so do I. I got to see all of the kids have a great time on what was a really nice day. If you think that competition doesn’t exist, think again! Even at the K-3 grade levels, it exists. It’s all in good fun though. If you’re kid has a field day, take the day off, or at least half a day off and go watch our kid(s) participate in field day! It means so much to them having the you there.

We have another “unofficial”, holiday on our hands this weekend. Mother’s Day is this Sunday. If you ask Mother’s (and maybe some father’s as well), Mother’s day is as “Official”, as Thanksgiving or Halloween. Mom’s spend an incredible amount doing time and energy doing a variety of tasks everyday with little or no credit only because whatever the task at hand needs done. Some may accuse me of kissing up a bit here but my wife does a lot of things that just get done that go un-noticed. As I am writing this, she is at home right now finishing off putting a coat of stain on the back deck. That’s just one of the many things she does everyday. If you have a chance to say “Thanks”, to your Mom this weekend, make sure you do so. If you don’t have a chance to say “Thanks”, to your Mom, I’m sure that she is somewhere she can hear you. So to all Mom’s everywhere…THANKS!!!!

It’s hard to believe that my little girl is going to her first prom this year! Where did the time go? She’s just not supposed to be this old yet. But here she is going to her first prom. And she’s going with a group of friends that I know, so that makes me feel better. I appreciate that fact that she cares enough about how I feel to include me and my opinion regarding her dress. Fortunetely she chose something pretty conservative. I keep telling her to enjoy all of these little moments because they only happen once. I know she’s ready for all of this…I’m just not sure that I am. Growing older stinks!

As we exit another month, I find myself feeling like I just can’t keep up. There are so many things going on all the time; sometimes I don’t know whether I’m coming or going. I know a lot of folks feel the same way. Next week is a fund raiser for the family of Nick Vogt. If you don’t know who Nick is, you’re missinig out. And I’ve never even met the guy. Nick is a U.S. soldier who risked his own life in Afganistan to save someone else. Nick lost both of his legs. He is currently at a hospital on the east coast. Hopefully he will get to come home soon. But after the fan fare and the fund raising for the family, then what? A lot of times we tend to forget about people like Nick. We get so wrapped up in our own world running here and there that we forget people who give us the freedom to take our kids here and there and be involved in a number of things that keep us so busy. Next week we will be out doing some fund raising in Crestline, Galion and Bucyrus to coincide with a 5K run next weekend for Nick and his family. If you get a chance, stop by and donate what you can…grab one of our static stickers and place it somewhere that people will see. Over time we may forget about Nick as we get back to our everyday life. Let that static sticker be a reminder of who we are as a people and the people that provide us those freedoms that we take for granted so frequently. Thanks to Nick and all of the Veterans!!!

When is the last time (or if ever) that you went out to buy a new car? For me, this is the first time. Not just “new to me”, but an actual new car, and I have to tell you, it’s rather frustrating. First of all, what I want and what I’ll end up with is different. When you have kids you figure this one out. Secondly, finding time to go on line to find a car when the kids are involved in things after school becomes a pain. And I’m realizing that I do not like to haggle about price with a car dealer. At all. Just tell me how much the car is and then I will figure everything else out. What is the best price you can give me on that particular car? And some of the things that are attached to the sticker price gets me too. $35.00 for a USB cable. I can get one of those for about $2 at an electronics store. Destination fees? Really? I’ll let you know how things turn out with this very soon.

I never have any time anymore (at least it seems) to do anything but run. Kids are here and there and everywhere and sometimes it’s all I can do just to keep up with them. My wife and I are working on finishing off the kitchen (a 3 year project), get a piece of carpet in the house replaced, looking for a new car, fix the lawn mower, keep up with house chores, homework, etc. Does this sound like you? Sometimes I feel like I’m the ONLY one in hyper-drive, or maybe I just see people in passing so much because they are in hyper-drive. The joke in the house now is that we can sleep when we die. I hope is mellows out a bit before I hit that extreme.

Any surprises for you in the basketball tournament yet? Many feel Ohio University, being a 13 seed is a bit of a surprise. I got a chance to speak to Clark Kellogg this week, and he said that those kids feel like they belong there. They don’t feel like there is a “Cinderella”, tag attached to them. Although I think it’s funny how they can go the entire year, win a majority of their games, win the MAC tournament, make the NCAA tournament, and if they win a couple of games, most folks look at them as under-achievers just getting lucky. These guys can flat-out play, and because they chose to go to a MAC school they don’t get the national press as some other players do. By the way, is anybody talking about Duke or Missouri now? I wish the Bobcats well in the tournament.

Both of my kids are involved in the high school musical tyhis weekend at the Palace Theatre in Marion. Ridgedale’s Production of “Li”l Abner”. the cast involves over 70 kids from the 1st-12th grades. My wife and I also volunteer our time to help out with props on and off stage, sound, and even running a broom to clean-up. It makes for some long days but it’s really a lot of fun and it’s only a few days out of my life. If I could pass along some words of wisdom to parents who have kids involved in extra-curricular activities it would be to GET INVOLVED! You don’t have to be a theatre major to get involved in a high school play; help out backstage moving props on and off stage. You don’t have to be a world class athlete to teach a kid the basics of a sport. If you think your kids don’t or wouldn’t appreciate it you’re wrong. I can’t think of another place I need to be this weekend. By the way, the show is this weekend…for tickets call 740-383-2101.

Coming this Tuesday is a big day in Ohio with the Primary Elections, and it looks like Ohio is one of those pivotal states again this year. There are alot of candidates at all levels in government vying for positions, not too mention all of the issues on the ballot. I’m a firm believer that if you don’t vote, you have no right to complain about what’s going on. Voting is your RIGHT as an American citizen. Exercise your right and go to the polls on Tuesday. If you don’t like a particular candidate or proposed levy, vote. Nothig gets done just complaining too your neighbor. Also, take time to read all of the issues before you vote. Understand what it is your voting about instead of just clicking “no”, to get it over with.
